Oringo Africana Opens in Former Dignowity Meats Space in San Antonio
September 19, 2026
SAN ANTONIO, TX — A familiar restaurant space on San Antonio's East Side has a new tenant with the opening of Oringo Africana, a restaurant specializing in West African cuisine.
The restaurant celebrated its grand opening on September 19, 2026, at 1701 E. Houston Street, less than a mile from the Alamodome and downtown San Antonio.
The building was previously home to Dignowity Meats, a popular San Antonio barbecue restaurant.
Oringo Africana is owned by Ugochukwu Christian Ijoma and brings a variety of traditional West African dishes to the neighborhood.
Menu options include jollof rice, egusi and fufu, okra, grilled tilapia, and other meat and seafood dishes.
The opening represents a major expansion for the business.
Before moving into the Houston Street location, Oringo Africana operated as a food truck at 111 Probandt Street near San Antonio's Blue Star Arts Complex.
The move gives customers the option to enjoy the restaurant's food in a permanent dine-in setting in addition to ordering takeout.
The restaurant also offers catering for private events and gatherings.
Its location on East Houston Street places Oringo Africana in an area that has experienced continued investment and redevelopment as businesses expand east from downtown San Antonio.
The East Side includes a growing collection of restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, residential developments, and locally owned businesses.
The opening also brings new activity to a restaurant space that had been vacant following the closure of Dignowity Meats.
For Oringo Africana, the transition from food truck to a permanent restaurant represents an opportunity to serve more customers while introducing more San Antonio residents and visitors to West African food and culture.
